Q: What should I NOT bring to the residence halls?

A: The items below are prohibited from the residential communities and are strongly advised against.

Q: What is provided in a typical room?

A: Rooms are furnished with a desk (2), desk chairs (2), dresser (2), extra-long twin mattress and bed frame (2), and waredrobe if the room does not have closet space. Rooms are also equipped with a phone jack, cable outlet, and ethernet connection.

Q: What buildings will first year students reside?

A: Females are housed in Lorraine Hansberry, and Ashmun hall. Males are housed in Frederick Douglass and McRary hall.

Q: Are the rooms equipped with a phone and how do I find out my phone number?

A: The rooms do not come with a phone, but they are equipped with phone jacks. It is required that each resident bring a telephone, phone chord, and splitter. Your telephone extension will be provided check-in.

Q: Do the residence halls have wireless internet?

A: Yes, each residence hall has access to wireless internet service. If you have a Mac, you may need to have the IT department configure your laptop for the LionNet service.

Q: Will I be informed about my roommate?

A: Yes. Incoming students will have information regarding residence hall assignment, roommate name and phone number, and the rules and regulations mailed to their homes during the summer. This information will also be available during the One Day Drive. Returning upperclassmen have the option of selecting their roommates during the Room Selection Process.

Q: What are the inter-visitation hours?

A: Inter-visitation is being able to visit a single sex residence hall during designated hours. Inter-visitation hours are Sunday-Thursday 6pm - 11pm, Friday-Saturday 6pm - 230am.

Q: What halls are co-ed?

A: Apartment Style Living (A.S.L.) and Rendall hall are the only co-ed facilities. Rendall is co-ed by floor and A.S.L. is co-ed by suite.

Q: Are there single rooms avaiable?

A: Yes. There are a limited amount of singles that are available during the Room Selection Process. First year students are not permitted to reside in singles.

Q: Are the rooms air-conditioned?

A: Apartment Style Living (A.S.L.) is the only residence hall with air-conditioned rooms.

Q: Where do I go to check-in?

A: With the exception of Cresson hall, Amos hall, McCauley, and Houston hall, all check-ins are done at the office of the assigned residence hall. Amos hall reports to Frederick Douglass, Cresson reports to Lorrain Hansberry, McCauley reports to Lucy Laney, and Houston hall reports to McRary for check-in.

Q: Do I have to move all of my things out during the Winter break?

A: No. The halls will be closed and secured during the break and residents will be required to return room keys back in. We do suggest that residents to take valuble personal items with them.

Q: How are rooms assigned?

A: Rooms are assigned to incoming freshmen and transfer students upon admissision and receipt of the acceptance fee. The Office of Residence Life makes an effort to accomadate preference and roommate request, but can not guarantee they will be honored. Returning upperclassmen have the opportunity to select their room assignment and roommate(s) during the Room Selection Process in late March.

Q: When can I change my room or roommate(s)?

A: Changes can be made two weeks after classes begin. Changes must be approved by the appropriate RHC.

Q: Who can reside in Apartment Style Living (A.S.L.)?

A: Any student who has completed 15 credit hours, has a 2.5 overall cumulative grade point average and no judicial sanctions.

Q: What can I get sanctioned/fined for?

A: You can be sanctioned/fined for violating school policies. Review the Student Handbook for a complete list.

Q: How do I pay my room deposit?

A: Room deposits can be paid through the Bursar's Office with cash, credit card, debit card with the Visa/Master Card logo, money order or any credit on your student account.

Q: Can I get a room after classes start?

A: Yes, if there are still rooms available.

Q: If I cancel my housing agreement, will my room deposit be refunded?

A: Yes, your housing deposit will be refunded. But, the $275 acceptance fee is non-refundable.
